• Biography

I am an artist living and working in Santa Fe, NM, currently focused on works on paper. I strive to make this work carry an opening visual punch, while maintaining an initial descriptive ambiguity of purpose, "story", or meaning; in other words, to be engaging to the eye, while remaining opaque in interpretation--at first encounter. My hope is that this initial "huh?" of mental (in)comprehension, is accompanied by a nagging invitation back, or a vaguely familiar resonance; one that is felt rather than known, and that this prods further engagement with the riddles enclosed.

Through the use of idiosyncratic, symbolic forms, animated by and within a graphically energized virtual space, I seek to "mirror" or "echo" (albeit as an abstract allegory), my ongoing psychological negotiation with the sometimes turbulent, often ridiculous, social currents in the larger, enveloping culture.

Prior to 2011, I resided in Chicago, IL where I was a professor of art at the University of Illinois at Chicago (1983-2007). I received my BFA from the University of New Mexico (1968) and MFA from the University of Colorado (1972). I have exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; AKG Museum, Buffalo, NY; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC. I received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Arts Midwest, the J.S. Guggenheim Foundation, the L.C. Tiffany Foundation, the Illinois Arts Council and the Roswell Artist Residency. My work can be found in institutional collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the AKG Museum in Buffalo NY, the State of Illinois Art Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art and the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin, OH; in addition to representation in numerous corporate and private collections throughout the United States.
